Cross Country Vehicle Trial
Coney Green – 22nd October 2006 – Martin Pittaway
As Steve was on holiday he asked me to run the day for him , so with the threat of rain for the day off I set to Coney Green for our October CCVT. I’m greeted with a new entrance onto the site which is a lot safer as we are now able to see left and right when leaving.
With 8 of us scrutineered and signed on we pair up and head of into the sunshine to lay out sections ready for the days trial.
45 minutes later we all re-group and head of for the 1st section . This starts on the top of the large bank that runs the length of the site and drops in and out of the wooded slope , although this did not cause many problems it did catch Russ and Glyn on the bottom turn. Next section was a few yards along on the same slope most penalties were gained at the six gate across soft sandy ruts on the side slopes. Russ and Richard drove the best here with 4’s.
Back now to the top of the gully by the camping field for the 3rd section a downhill start to the bottom track then climbing up to nasty ruts and roots at gate 1. Hamish and myself having trouble on the down slope, but I’d rather not talk about that. PS if anyone heard me swear, my apologies.
On now to section 4, another drop and climb, this time across a large gully. Lots of discussion here about the drop into this gully, as it seemed to have the nearside rear wheel 3ft in the air on the down slope, still not too many screams.
Now the trouble starts as we move to section 5, it begins to rain. We all have difficulty with this section, but Adrian managed an impressive climb up the bank and over the step at the top for a 5. Hamish kept us amused with his second run at this climb, as he dislodges both rear springs. Then off we go to lunch for a break, so Hamish can get those springs back in place.
After lunch with it still raining we drive off to the last two sections, both up and down off the bottom track. With these now very wet only Hamish manages a clear on the first one, the rest of us sliding about on the mud and tree roots.
Richard ended the day with the lowest score of 30, followed by Adrian in his standard 90 with 35. We all had a very enjoyable day, and lots of fun sliding about in the mud, which is what trialling is all about. Results all done, and canes collected we all load up and return home in time for tea!
