Latest Caravan Event Reviews
A note for any new members who would like to come along for a camping or caravanning weekend, just give us a ring with any questions you might have and we will happily try to answer them. It would be great to see some new faces, joining the familiar ones at our weekend get togethers. A gentle reminder – most of our campers when arriving at an event do, call and see the Rally Officers before selecting their pitch, but there are one or two naughty ones who do not. Please please book in with the Rally Officer so that everyone knows who is there and who is with the Midland Rover Owners Club.
We look forward to seeing you out and about in your tent or caravan.
Caravan Report
Comberton
The Golf Club site was well attended and on Friday and Saturday we were blessed with some good weather, so visits to shops, cafes and pubs in Pershore were the order of the day. The evening saw a party of 16 merry souls wining and dining at the Anchor Inn in the nearby village of Eckington. Sunday morning we awoke to 2 inches of snow, but undeterred, 9 adventurous hardy walkers, set off for the lower slopes of Bredon Hill, with our trusty Sherpa guide Martin Armstrong. Thanks to Martin for his rambling expertise, to Marg and Pete Wykes, for being the perfect Rally Officers. (and to Michael Boyle for the sweets)
Far Forest
All caravans were decorated with festive lighting for the Christmas Meal at Far Forest and again this meeting was well attended. The adjoining Plough Inn served us with fine ales and some good food, together with a large helping of Christmas Spirit. Many thanks to Val and John Kesterton for running this popular event.
Wetton
The New Year Rally at the Royal Oak in Wetton, Derbyshire enabled us to relax after the Christmas rush, with good walking, site seeing and visits to the many beauty spots. The local hunt gathered at the pub on the morning of New Year’s Eve and we were all treated to this fine spectacle, as well as a glass of warming spirits from the Landlady. New Year’s Eve was spent in the Royal Oak, complete with real log fires, very good ale and an exceptional, complimentary buffet, followed by the arrival of 2008. I am pleased to report that the Landlords, Janet and Brian made us very welcome and looked after us well.
National 2007
This event was very well supported by the MROC with some 39 units camping over the week end. The event was well laid out and camping arrangements were good. The weather was poor and made access to some areas difficult.
Slimbridge
What a pity that only 4 units attended this lovely week end. A very peaceful and attractive site located adjacent to the Gloucester Sharpness Canal, with the pub within easy walking distance. The weather was very kind and allowed me time to inspect the inside of my eyelids whilst soaking up the sunshine. A tour of the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust and a walk around the Gloucester Docks provided some good entertainment for us all.
Ashbourne.
Some dozen units attended our new site near Ashbourne in April. The site was just a hundred yards walking to the village of Birchover & the two pubs. Birchover Farm also accommodated a variety of campers including very well behaved teenagers taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. The farm was also home to a number of pretty parading peacocks.
Brian East organised a very well attended shinny motors green lane run through the beautiful Derbyshire country side taking in a viewing of the local Eco Warriors tree top camp. All vehicles returned safely and unscratched, although very dusty. Thanks to John & Val for running the event, thanks to Brian for the green lane run and thanks to all the members who supported this new venue.
Birdlip.
This last minute change of venue due to the none availability of Highley, although poorly advertised attracted some twenty camping/caravan units. The weekend had its usual mixture of weather so normal at Birdlip. Both trials were also well attended and a relaxing weekend was enjoyed by all. Thanks to the regular members and welcome to our new members
Bourton on the Water
14 units attended the Rally at Bourton on the Water late in March and we enjoyed a chilly but very welcome break in the Cotswolds. Lovely villages to walk round, drive through, an enjoyable evening meal at the Coach and Horses on Saturday and a trip to the Farmer’s Market in Bourton on Sunday morning. The event was rounded off with Kite Flying a la Cookie! Our thanks to Kath and Martin for rally stewarding.
