Reviews of Eastnor Tyro
Who has previously laid out a Tyro- Richard Banks.
Who had to go home ill - Richard Banks.
Who has never even seen a Tyro - me.
Who agreed to lay one out - me.
Sunday evening James Savage, Sarah Barron and me took a drive around Bronsil to try and get some sort of idea of what land was useable. After a strenuous but pleasant drive in the evening sunshine it was too late to lay out and some refreshment was called for. An early start Monday morning was decided. So, David Gregory, Timmy Gregory and me headed out as dawn was breaking to meet Charles Whitaker who had been Yomping across the hills with a 1/2 ton rucksack. This is in training for an assault on Mount McKinley and not some strange early morning ritual. We managed to lay out 5 sections and returned to base wondering if anybody would gturn up or was our dedication all for nought.
To our surprise other people do get up on a Bank Holiday Monday morning and a veritable hoard of Tyroers awaited us clamouring to sign on. After all the official business, bacon sandwiches etc, we headed of with 15 entrants. Here the Tyroers, if anyone has a better word please let me know, demonstrated their ability to stay in convoy unlike the RTV crowd who ended up in Hollybush on the Saturday.
A wide variety of drivers and vehicles started the day. From drivers who have experience of CCVT and RTV and some who have never driven a Land Rover before to those who were too young to possess a licence. Vehicles ranged from Freelander to Discovery 3 to fully fledged CCVT motors. The completion was very tight throughout the day with a high number of clears recorded particularly from the less experienced drivers. Some of the experienced drivers were perhaps just a little bit over confident. With the scores very close after 5 sections a sixth was added to try and establish a final result.
Back at base the official ALRC guidelines were consulted to try and establish winners, i.e. all yellow vehicles etc. were excluded. The winner of the SWB class was Becky Armstrong with one point. The winner of the LWB class was Elliot Cartwright with all clears. We had a fabulous day, bathed in glorious sunshine and a large crowd of mainly partisan Armstrongs cheered on the competitors.
Thank you to all those who laid out and marshalled and to the competitors who made it such an enjoyable day.
